'And they're off' retail relies on shopping sprees  - 11/27/2009
From big-box stores on Grape Road to locally-owned shops in Niles, Three Oaks, Plymouth and Goshen, welcomed the holiday shopping season with incentives (either actual or perceived) to encourage guarded consumers to loosen their wallets. Tech-savvy buyers are increasingly turning to Web sites, Twitter updates, and underground stories to find the biggest sales scoops.

Governments must strike balance with incentives - 11/19/2009
Communities in Michiana are increasingly turning to "tax phase-ins" to lure businesses to set up shop in the area, in exchange for new jobs and other investments. But do these economic tools always add up? What is good locally, can also cancel out national steps. MSNBC's Elkhart Project offers great insight in this article.

In a mixed outlook: bright spots - 11/17/2009
Encouraging "green shoots" of economic rebound seems to be sprouting in the region. The latest? Elkhart's Heartland RV to fil l 400 openings by Spring. It is encouraging news. To be sure, there is evidence other firms are adding employees, albeit at a slower and spotty rate. That's the problem: many economists predict moderate job growth in the next year. In other business segments, service companies are still making cost-cutting moves like reduced hours and voluntary unpaid vacations. Still, there's a measure of promise one year on from near financial collapse.

Snacking our way to an improved economy  - 11/14/2009
As the local economic recovery takes time to get a foothold, you don't have to look far to find inspirational entrepreneurs. In just a day's time, I talked with start-ups and young but established firms standing strong despite a softer consumer climate. (Ok, so it was a food-themed quest). A young laid-off RV worker just opened a specialty meats food store in Elkhart (Hickory Meats and More on CR 17), a gourmet popcorn store moved to a more promising location in South Bend (PopStyle in Erskine Village ), and a young couple traded corporate careers to start a hot dog stand in Goshen (near Lake City Bank). Remember the power of samples! There are many small business owners who refuse to let current conditions sour their dreams.

Smart steps may go far in Elkhart Co.  - 11/11/2009
Leaders from business, government, and media have launched a focused effort to develop a plan that taps trends in industry, technology, and education for building a more resilient community. The Horizon 2.0 project is worthy of its work, but no allusions that it will be easy. Still, with burgeoning green enterprises and entrepreneurial roots - the effort here is better positioned to succeed than in many other similar-sized metro areas.

Red zone: One ND home game left for local biz - 11/09/2009
One home game (Nov. 21, UConn) remains on the Notre Dame football schedule and it's a last chance for local businesses to earn revenue from the fans who visit. Spotty weather and turbulent games have provided plenty of fan fodder - and local establishments hope there's a strong ending to the business season no matter what happens with the program.

ND opener win encouraging to local businesses - 09/08/2009
Michiana businesses report a surge in business after the home opener win for the University of Notre Dame football program - and is encouraging for hotels, restaurants, and other enterprises who hope to benefit from the renewed excitement.
