In a mixed outlook: bright spots - 11/17/2009 Encouraging "green shoots" of economic rebound seems to be sprouting in the region. The latest? Elkhart's Heartland RV to fil l 400 openings by Spring. It is encouraging news. To be sure, there is evidence other firms are adding employees, albeit at a slower and spotty rate. That's the problem: many economists predict moderate job growth in the next year. In other business segments, service companies are still making cost-cutting moves like reduced hours and voluntary unpaid vacations. Still, there's a measure of promise one year on from near financial collapse. |

Snacking our way to an improved economy - 11/14/2009 As the local economic recovery takes time to get a foothold, you don't have to look far to find inspirational entrepreneurs. In just a day's time, I talked with start-ups and young but established firms standing strong despite a softer consumer climate. (Ok, so it was a food-themed quest). A young laid-off RV worker just opened a specialty meats food store in Elkhart (Hickory Meats and More on CR 17), a gourmet popcorn store moved to a more promising location in South Bend (PopStyle in Erskine Village ), and a young couple traded corporate careers to start a hot dog stand in Goshen (near Lake City Bank). Remember the power of samples! There are many small business owners who refuse to let current conditions sour their dreams. |

Smart steps may go far in Elkhart Co. - 11/11/2009 Leaders from business, government, and media have launched a focused effort to develop a plan that taps trends in industry, technology, and education for building a more resilient community. The Horizon 2.0 project is worthy of its work, but no allusions that it will be easy. Still, with burgeoning green enterprises and entrepreneurial roots - the effort here is better positioned to succeed than in many other similar-sized metro areas. |
