Better and faster rail is the right track - 01/29/2010
Even though the federal government failed to grant
Northern Indiana funds to make improvements for
high-speed rail, regional officials and economic
leaders should still work hard to upgrade
passenger service-and to pursue later funds if
they become available. Still, the news is good for
Niles and Northwest Indiana, areas to see upgrade
help as part of a Chicago to Detroit route.
Keep on track... It's our view
that building efficient transportation links,
especially Elkhart and South Bend to Chicago via
South Shore Railroad, should be aggressively
developed. It will be a boon to area business,
especially since we face the nearly certain return
to throat-gulping gas prices.
Economic upstart: will the plans hold? - 01/17/2010
Promising announcements from area companies have
injected new optimism into the region lately, but
with a dose of caution that growth is yet at the
mercy of national conditions. That said, European
electric car maker Think says it will set up shop
with a $43 million investment in a local plant.
RV makers are calling back workers, and there's
even plans for an RV resort near Countryside
Farmer's Market. With these hopeful signs,
business diversity and advanced training should
still be a premium strategy moving forward. No
matter what.
A development mantra for tomorrow - 01/10/2010
A new year and decade brings fresh thinking. So,
we have a few simple ideas for local government
and development officials to include in their task
list for the near and far term... (1)
improve transportation flow,
including coordinated stoplights that make sense..
(2) reach out and listen - both
publicly and privately - to chief executives and
small business owners... (3) make it
easier for local enterprises to work with
cities and counties... (4) begin
planning urban in-fills with attractive
living centers that use the latest modular green
building techniques... (5) include good
and thoughtful design in projects of all
kinds... (6) a bigger push for a healthier
community, starting with stronger smoking
curbs. These are a few early sparks we think can
help kickstart a progressive approach to area
challenges.
A unique big building: but what should it be? - 12/16/2009
Talk about skin in the game. Plenty of people in
the region should have an interest in the future
of the downtown South Bend museum building that
houses the now-leaving College Football Hall of
Fame. City leaders are soliciting input; yet some
ideas at the onset seem more realistic than
others. It seems to us a hybrid approach with
complementary but progressive businesses could
jump-start a professional services center. Let's
put creatives, engineers, and chic cafes under one
roof.
Electric truck production to rev up Elkhart Co. - 12/06/2009
Truck manufacturer Navistar was a backdrop for
President Obama's early '09 visit - as a symbol of
hope at the height of the "Great
Recession" for some communities like Elkhart
County. Now, the
company has struck a deal with a UK company
to make electric trucks, which will mean
production and hiring in 2010. Development of the
electric motors is buoyed by federal green energy
and technology grants.
'Shop local' effort gains ground - 12/01/2009
Local business owners want people to remember that
the dollars spent at locally-owned enterprises go
further and have a stronger impact than if the
money is spent elsewhere. A
group of professionals have started SHOLO in
St. Joseph County, which includes a value card, to
encourage a "shop local" mantra - for
the holidays and beyond.
